Maya Middlemiss

Founder of Remote Work Europe

Maya Middlemiss is a pioneering voice in the European remote-work movement, with over 25 years of experience as a freelancer, strategist, speaker, and advocate for distributed collaboration. Launching her remote career in 2000 out of necessity as a new mother, she was among the first to embrace location-independent work long before it became a global trend. Since then, her path has taken her through distributed entrepreneurship, strategic consulting, and storytelling – always with the mission to help others design fulfilling, livelihood-driven remote lives.

As the founder of Remote Work Europe, Maya has built a thriving community that brings together freelancers, solopreneurs, employees, and digital nomads across borders—creating a bridge between European diversity and remote work opportunity. She shares practical guidance, policy insight, and narrative leadership through her writing, speaking, and community-driven programming. On Episode 03 of the Nomad Summit Podcast, titled “Europe’s Remote Work Revolution,” she highlighted Europe’s rich cultural complexity, the power of in-person connection, and Estonia’s pioneering role in enabling remote entrepreneurs via initiatives like e‑Residency.

In 2025, Maya co‑hosts the Nomad Summit Remote Work Edition in Tallinn, Estonia – in partnership with Visit Estonia – bringing together workshops, strategic sessions, and the world’s first in-person Remote Job Fair for attendees to connect directly with hiring employers. This event reflects her deep commitment to moving beyond remote-work hype toward actionable support, sustainable careers, and inclusive opportunity for anyone transitioning to remote work without compromising stability or belonging.
