27 | Pavi Lustig: The Voice that Goes Around the World
Show Notes
In Episode 27 of the Nomad Summit Podcast, we sit down with voiceover artist, audio engineer, filmmaker, and full-time traveller Pavi Lustig. Known globally as a location-independent voice actor and sometimes introducing himself as a “VO-mad,” Pavi has built a career that blends professional audio work with a life lived across continents.
From recording in makeshift studios to navigating changing industry standards, Pavi’s story is one of creativity, reinvention, technical mastery, and the ongoing evolution of modern nomad life.
Building a Global Voiceover Career as a Digital Nomad
Most people imagine voice actors standing in professional studios surrounded by acoustic panels and expensive microphones. Pavi’s workspace looks very different. Sometimes it is a carefully built home setup. Other times it is a walk-in closet in a hotel, a temporary pillow fort in an Airbnb, or a studio assembled inside a suitcase.
For Pavi, the ability to record anywhere is not a limitation. It is part of the adventure. He has developed a repeatable system that allows him to deliver broadcast-quality audio across time zones, continents, and unpredictable environments. Good microphones help, but what matters most is technique, consistency, and understanding how to treat a space.
This flexibility has allowed him to maintain a steady international client base while traveling extensively across Europe, India, and Asia.
Mastering the Three Pillars of a Successful Voiceover Business
During the conversation, Pavi breaks down the reality of working full time in the voiceover industry. Contrary to what many imagine, the time spent at the microphone is only a fraction of the job. He describes his business as built on three foundational pillars:
Performance
The artistic work of reading scripts, finding the right tone, and serving the emotional intention of the text.Audio Engineering
Understanding microphones, acoustics, editing, and file preparation. For nomads, this also includes the challenge of quickly making any temporary space recordable.Client Management
Communication, reliability, scheduling, versioning, feedback, and long-term relationship building. The part that keeps the business alive.
According to Pavi, most aspiring voice actors underestimate pillar number three. In reality, strong client management is often what separates amateurs from professionals.
Understanding Global Voiceover Pricing and Industry Standards
One of the most eye-opening parts of the conversation is Pavi’s breakdown of voiceover pricing worldwide. Rates can vary drastically depending on region, usage rights, buyouts, and industry norms.
In countries like Germany, price guidelines are publicly available and heavily respected. In other regions, rates may be significantly lower, creating challenges for both buyers and creators. Pavi explains how he navigates this landscape, how he sets fair but sustainable prices, and why global clients need education on the value of professional voices.
He also touches on union standards, market differences, and why transparency is crucial for building trust.
The Rise of AI Voices and the Future of the Industry
Artificial intelligence is rapidly shaping the voiceover world. While some creators worry about being replaced, others lean into the changes by licensing their voices for synthetic use.
Pavi takes a nuanced stance. AI voices will grow, but they cannot replace authentic human emotion, adaptability, and storytelling. However, he acknowledges that the industry is in transition. Voice actors must stay informed, diversify their skills, and adapt to new technologies rather than fear them.
As he puts it, there will always be space for human voices that connect deeply with audiences.
A Personal Journey Shaped by Creativity and Legacy
Pavi’s creative path was heavily influenced by his upbringing. His father, Peter Lustig, was one of the most beloved children’s television hosts in Germany. Growing up surrounded by cameras, sets, and storytelling undoubtedly shaped Pavi’s later interests in sound, filmmaking, and performance.
Yet he also shares how important it was for him to find his own direction. His nomadic life, his film projects, and his global voiceover work all represent an identity he crafted independently.

From Voiceover Booths to Motorbike Roads in India
One of the highlights of the interview is the story behind his award-winning short film. What began as a personal project documenting a motorbike journey across India unexpectedly resonated with audiences around the world.
Pavi explains how the film grew from a spontaneous adventure into something that now lives permanently on the internet, inspiring tens of thousands of viewers. For him, the experience reinforced the value of passion projects. Sometimes the work you create for yourself travels farther than the work you create for clients.
Community, Serendipity, and Life on the Road
A recurring theme in the episode is the importance of community. Whether at events, conferences, festivals, or informal meetups, Pavi believes that human connection is often the spark that leads to collaboration, inspiration, and new opportunities.
Life as a nomad can be unpredictable, but for him, the uncertainty is part of the magic. The road remains his creative partner. Every new city is a potential workspace. Every new encounter is a potential story.
Why Pavi’s Story Matters for Digital Nomads
This episode is more than a conversation about voiceover work. It is a reminder that modern nomadism can take many forms. You can build a serious career while traveling. You can work with clients in multiple countries while recording in improvised studios. You can create meaningful art while living a life in motion.
Pavi Lustig proves that the world can be your office, your inspiration, and your stage.
